One hundred and fifty years ago, two papers were read before a small gathering at the Royal Society of London. In these papers, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace sketched the outlines of a theory intended to explain how species could evolve organs and behaviors suited to their local environments. Though scientists at the time could hardly have guessed at the complex cellular and molecular processes underlying life, much of what we now understand of the logic of life has been informed by these counterintuitive theories.
